Universities are one of the oldest and most successful creations in history.

From humble medieval beginnings, universities now play a critical role in almost every nation on earth. In Australia, universities teach more than 1.5 million students each year. They dominate our investment in public research.

I am currently exploring universities from humble beginnings in medieval Europe to the multi-faceted behemoths of today. And asking a simple question – can universities really achieve everything we now ask them to?
